We’re looking for an Art Coordinator to support Single Thread Theatre Company’s XR projects, mainly including the Performance and XR (PXR) conference, an annual hybrid event that takes place in VR and in-person across Canada. The conference brings together artists and technologists to discuss and share all things related to XR (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality)performance. The ideal candidate must have experience world building in VR. This position is funded by the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program.
Responsibilities will include:
Develop and articulate the artistic vision and visual style for the VR conference world, ensuring alignment with the event’s branding and messaging.
Collaborate with Producers, Designers, and Technical Leads to conceptualize immersive, visually engaging environments and assets.
Oversee the creation of 3D assets, textures, and interactive elements, ensuring consistency in quality and style.
Provide detailed feedback to designers and artists on environmental assets, character design, and UI/UX components.
Lead the spatial design of the VR world, establishing layout, flow, and key visual landmarks to optimize attendee navigation and engagement.
Integrate environmental storytelling techniques to create a cohesive, immersive experience.
Work closely with developers to ensure assets are optimized for performance and compatibility with VR platforms.
Review and approve assets for technical and artistic feasibility before implementation.
Present visual concepts and progress to Producers, incorporating feedback into iterative design processes.
Ensure alignment between artistic vision, technical capabilities, and event objectives.
Maintain a comprehensive asset library and ensure all design documentation is up to date and accessible to the team.
Conduct a post-conference debrief to assess the visual execution and recommend improvements for future builds.
Be 'on-site' full time for the week of the Conference and for the PXR Launch Party.
Qualifications
Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period (as per Canada Summer Jobs funding requirements).
Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
3+ Years experience in Unity Building for VR. Experience with virtual events and/or events in the arts or tech sector is an asset.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Able to work well independently and meet deadlines.
Highly organized with attention to detail.
Passion for and/or a creative practice rooted in immersive theatre and/or XR is a strong asset.

In 2020, Single Thread partnered with Electric Company Theatre with support from the Canada Council for the Arts to produce PXR 2020 - a four day symposium which brought together over two hundred artists, administrators, academics and technologists from diverse backgrounds across Canada in virtual reality using the AltspaceVR social platform to discuss how artists are using XR media and feature presentations from thought leaders in the area of XR, panel discussions, host networking events for artists and technologists. PXR has since become an annual event taking place on VRChat, a free-to-use social VR platform.
