Single Thread Theatre Company creates immersive theatre experiences in Canada and internationally that seek to advance the art of immersive storytelling through innovation and the presentation of new works.

For the past two decades, Single Thread has played a role in shaping enthusiasm and best practices for ‘site-specific’ and ‘immersive’ theatre in Canada and worked with hundreds of emerging and established theatre artists.

Looking forward, Single Thread is developing immersive storytelling techniques as a teaching tool in Canadian schools through the Single Thread Education program.

The company is also exploring the emerging medium of XR (augmented, virtual and mixed reality) as a means of telling stories to a broader audience through Single Thread XR.

Single Thread will continue to pioneer immersive storytelling techniques in site-specific, non traditional spaces while exploring sustainable models of production which enable this work to connect audiences across Canada and around the world.

2026: Through our IBPOC Fellowship program, we continue to empower groundbreaking Indigenous, Black, and People of Color artists across Canada. Supported by leading partners including the City of Kingston, the National Arts Centre (NAC), and the Canadian Media Fund, the fellowship provides eight fellows with comprehensive resources: a dedicated PXR community network, intensive six-week workshop series led by industry mentors, and provided VR equipment to keep to continue their unique artistic practice.

2024: Pioneered a groundbreaking hybrid event model by orchestrating a simultaneous and multi-venue (Hubs) experience across Canada. Successfully engaged key cultural institutions (Collective Art Commons, VIVO Media Arts, Theatre Passe Muraille) to significantly expand public access and deepen community engagement nationwide.

2023: Single Thread was awarded the prestigious Digital Greenhouse Grant allowing us to significantly expand our mission. We launched an immersive incubator program for our IBPOC Fellowship cohort (2023/2024), moving beyond traditional mentorship. This environment fostered collaboration, culminating in the successful development of a cohesive group project that showcased the artists’ collective talent and vision.

2022: With the support of the OAC, Single Thread added PXR Experience, a presentation series to showcase live performance by Canadian artists for audiences in virtual reality.

2022: Single Thread presented Collider at the SummerWorks Festival and World Stage Design Scenofest.

2021: Single Thread assembled Canada’s first national virtual reality theatre ensemble to undertake Collider, investigating the storytelling and movement potential of live, immersive theatre in virtual reality. Collider debuted at FoldA in Kingston, Ontario.

2020: Single Thread founded PXR, an annual conference for Canadian artists and digital content creators to explore the use of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality in the creation of live performance.
