XR Producer

About the job

As an XR Producer, you will work with the Single Thread team to plan, produce, and oversee the execution of all Single Thread XR activities, including the PXR 2023 Conference. This is a managerial role, which will be shared by two successful candidates.

You will be trained by the current XR producer to work at the intersection of XR (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) and live performance, on a national scale.

This position is funded by the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program and by Single Thread Theatre.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Determine key goals and benchmarks to be reached for Single Thread XR projects;

  • Work with Single Thread Production Manager to establish project schedules;

  • Oversee the tasks of the PR Director, Venue Producer, Technical Director and Social Media Coordinator;

  • Oversee execution of marketing plan for Single Thread XR’s 2023 season;

  • Lead development, sponsorship, grant-writing, and partnership efforts for Single Thread XR initiatives; 

  • Lead curation of PXR conference, with presenters, workshops, and panels;

  • Manage Single Thread XR project budgets;

  • Input on project concepts, programming, design; identify project risks, and work with the Single Thread team to develop contingency plans;

  • Coordinate regular meetings of project planning teams and provide a recap of each meeting with clear action items;

  • Coordinate and Co-Chair Steering Committee Meetings for the PXR Conference;

  • Assist in hiring and developing contracts for XR project teams;

  • Ensure each phase of PXR planning goes smoothly, including call for proposals, media outreach, announcements, initiatives, application selection, launch, registration, onboarding, debrief, archiving and project wrap-up;

  • Support the testing of event tools;

  • Provide live support during Single Thread events;

  • Act as an ambassador of PXR and Single Thread XR in a kind, professional, manner which ensures Single Thread and PXR’s continued growth and success;

  • Assist in the creation of contracts for new team members and where necessary, assisting in the posting of roles and the hiring of new staff through interviews;

  • Act as a project representative in the enforcement of Single Thread’s anti-harassment policy;

  • Act, where needed as representative of PXR in liaising with organizational partners (Toasterlab, Electric Company Theatre, etc.); and

  • Other duties as required that are reasonable and that are customarily performed by a person holding a similar position in the industry.

This is primarily a remote position, with regular online communication and periodic in-person meetings. The position begins part-time, scaling up to full-time to support the PXR Conference in the fall.

Contract Dates: June 5, 2023 - November 30, 2023

Salary Range: $13,000 - $14,000

Qualifications

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period (as per Canada Summer Jobs funding requirements).

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Experience producing theatre or events

  • Experience with virtual events and social media management is an asset.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write for different audiences. 

  • Able to work well independently and meet deadlines.
    Highly organized with attention to detail.

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite. 

  • Content creation skills are strongly valued. 

  • Existing relationships with Canadian theatre organizations an asset

  • Passion for and/or a creative practice rooted in immersive theatre and/or XR is a strong asset.

About Single Thread XR

Single Thread XR builds the capacity of artists to engage with XR, brings together artists and technologists to share work in performance and XR, and seeks to create new work that explores the intersections of immersive theatre and XR. 

In 2020, Single Thread partnered with Electric Company Theatre with support from the Canada Council for the Arts to produce PXR 2020 - a four day symposium which brought together over two hundred artists, administrators, academics and technologists from diverse backgrounds across Canada in virtual reality using the Altspace VR social platform to discuss how artists are using XR media and feature presentations from thought leaders in the area of XR, panel discussions, host networking events for artists and technologists. PXR has since become an annual event.
